I have often been suspicious of the 85% myth that many in the youth ministry community have tried to propagate over the past few years. It often focuses solely on the first couple of years after college when students may attend sporadically but may not place "membership" in a church (therefore appearing not to be connected). But it doesn't seem to account for the possibility that many of these students could return in the future.
